Srinagar: Authorities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir have once more placed Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a senior leader of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, under house arrest at his residence in Srinagar. This action has prevented him from attending Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in the city.
The move has drawn criticism from the Anjuman Awqaf of Jamia Masjid, Srinagar. In a statement, the organization condemned the continued house arrest of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the restrictions on his ability to fulfill his religious duties.
The Anjuman Awqaf described the authorities’ actions as undemocratic and hostile. They emphasized that these measures are causing significant distress among the Muslims in the region, who regard Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as a spiritual and community leader.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been under intermittent house arrest since August 2019, following India’s revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. His detention has often coincided with heightened security measures in the region.
