IG Punjab Reviews Traffic Action Plan to Enhance Road Safety

LAHORE: Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, conducted a review meeting at the Central Police Office to assess the progress of the Chief Minister’s Traffic Action Plan. The meeting was attended by key officials, including Additional IG Traffic Mirza Farhan Baig and MD Safe Cities Authority Muhammad Ahsan Younas, among others, with Chief Traffic Officers and District Traffic Officers joining via video link.

During the meeting, Dr. Anwar evaluated the performance of traffic officers concerning the 100 tasks outlined in the Chief Minister’s initiative. The focus was on improving licensing systems, managing traffic effectively, and reducing road accidents. He stressed the importance of continuing the crackdown on overloaded vehicles and announced the development of a dashboard to monitor data related to e-challaning, licensing, and road management.

Dr. Anwar directed that drivers’ licenses be checked at bus terminals and transport hubs to prevent accidents and called for the wider distribution of body cameras to traffic officers. He highlighted how road infrastructure improvements and the removal of encroachments have led to better traffic flow.

Action will be taken against District Traffic Officers who show poor performance, Dr. Anwar stated. Officers are required to be active in the field, and those failing to meet the Chief Minister’s objectives risk removal from their positions. Vehicles violating traffic laws, such as overloading or over-speeding, will face impoundment, and unauthorized transport vehicles will be subject to strict enforcement measures.
