IG Punjab Rao Sardar Ali Khan orders crackdown on vehicles causing smog and environmental pollution across the province 

Lahore, December 16, 2021 (PPI-OT):Inspector General of Police Punjab Rao Sardar Ali Khan has said that crackdown on vehicles causing environmental pollution and smog has been intensified. IG Punjab said that ongoing campaign against high-emission vehicles and public service vehicles on highways should be made more effective and action should be taken against the vehicles violating the rules across province.

Rao Sardar Ali Khan directed that the traffic police and Punjab Highway patrol should play a proactive role in assisting the citizens in smog and fog and take all possible steps to maintain flow of traffic on highways and prevent accidents. IG Punjab directed that additional teams of Traffic Police and Punjab Highway Patrol should be deployed on the highways during foggy weather to ensure smooth flow of traffic as well as provide all possible help and assistance to the citizens in time of need.

Spokesperson of Punjab Police said that traffic police in all districts of province is conducting a special campaign against the vehicles emitting massive smoke on highways of Punjab. In this regard, so far this year 40,618 vehicles emitting smoke have been challaned and 4508 vehicles causing environmental pollution have been detained.

Giving details of each region of the province, he said that 2333 vehicles emitting smoke have been challaned and 437 vehicles have been detained in Rawalpindi region. In Sargodha region, 1971 smoke emitting vehicles have been challaned and 159 vehicles were detained. In Faisalabad region, 10895 smoke emitting vehicles were challaned and 761 vehicles were detained. Likewise, total of 3090 vehicles were challaned and 574 vehicles were detained in Sheikhupura region.

12302 vehicles were challaned and 1778 vehicles were detained in Gujranwala region. In Multan region 3199 smoke emitting vehicles were challaned and 216 vehicles were detained. In Sahiwal region, a total of 2343 smoke emitting vehicles were challaned and 340 vehicles were detained. In DG Khan Region a total of 2428 smoke emitting vehicles were challaned and 145 vehicles were detained.

In Bahawalpur region, 1448 smoke emitting vehicles were challaned and 96 vehicles were detained. In Lahore region, 609 smoke emitting vehicles were challaned and 200 vehicles were detained. Spokesperson Punjab Police said that on the orders of IG Punjab, awareness campaign on traffic rules is also being carried out in different districts to reduce traffic accidents as well as smog-related activities.
