Hindu Extremists in Shimla Demand Mosque Demolition Amid Anti-Muslim Protests

Shimla: A significant protest erupted in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, as hundreds of Hindu extremists gathered in the Sanjauli suburb, demanding the demolition of a local mosque and advocating against Muslim residency rights in the area. The protest, marked by the chanting of Hindu slogans and hymns, underscores rising religious tensions in the region.

According to Kashmir Media Service, approximately 500 protesters from various parts of Shimla converged near a four-storey mosque, exacerbating the already tense atmosphere. The demonstrators’ actions included urging local residents not to sell or rent properties to Muslims, intensifying the community divide. This campaign follows an alleged altercation involving a local businessman and Muslim traders in the Malyana area, which has fueled the ongoing conflict.

Further reports from Shimla-based journalist Chander Sekhar Luthra, shared on social media, reveal concerning developments involving local law enforcement. Police officers have been actively participating in discriminatory practices, reportedly advising shop owners to sever ties with Muslim employees. Luthra expressed his dismay over the police’s involvement, stating, “In my 55 years, I’ve never witnessed such a shameful display of intolerance in Shimla or Himachal.”

The events in Shimla reflect a broader pattern of increasing religious intolerance across India, highlighting significant challenges in addressing communal harmony within the country.
