Hindu extremists claim another Jamia Masjid of Tipu Sultan era, file application in court

Bengaluru, November 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):In the Indian state of Karnataka, the Hindu extremist organization, Bajrang Dal, has filed a petition in the High Court demanding the vacating of a mosque in the State claiming to be a Hanuman temple in the past. The petition claims that the Jamia Masjid located in the historic town of Srirangapatan in Mandya district contains vestiges of Hindu deities and temple structures, so the mosque should be vacated immediately and Hindus should be allowed to bathe in the Kalyani (traditional water bodies) located in the mosque premises.

The petition states that there is evidence that the mosque was once a Hindu temple. According to the Indian media, Bajrang Dal workers have demanded a re-survey of the mosque on the pattern of Gianavapi mosque. The application was submitted by Bajrang Dal state President Manjunath.

Earlier, Hindutva groups had sought permission from the authorities to offer prayers at the mosque. Jamia Masjid, also known as Masjid Aala, is located inside the Srirangapatna Fort. This fort was built in 1786-87 during the reign of Tipu Sultan. Hindus claim that the Jamia Masjid was built by demolishing the Hanuman temple.
