High-Level Talks on National Tractor Policy Aim to Boost Agriculture and Industry

Islamabad: A high-level meeting focused on the formulation of a National Tractor Policy was convened under the chairmanship of Mr. Haroon Akhtar Khan, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the tractor manufacturing sector, to discuss strategies for strengthening local industry and supporting the agricultural sector.

Mr. Khan emphasized the importance of the proposed policy, which he described as a landmark initiative in line with the Prime Minister’s vision. He underscored the critical role of tractor manufacturers in enhancing domestic production and stressed the need for affordable tractors to benefit farmers nationwide. In pursuit of this goal, Mr. Khan directed manufacturers to propose measures to lower tractor prices, making them more accessible to the farming community.

“Local industry protection is central to the Prime Minister’s vision,” Mr. Khan stated. He highlighted the interconnected nature of agriculture, exports, and manufacturing sectors, emphasizing their role in driving economic growth. Increasing exports and improving the national economy remain key priorities for the government, he added.

During the meeting, tractor manufacturers expressed concerns about high GST, regulatory duties, and markup rates, along with the absence of a consistent policy framework. They commended Mr. Khan’s proactive approach and commitment to addressing these challenges.

The meeting concluded with a decision to hold a follow-up session next week to further deliberate on the proposals. Mr. Khan also mentioned that implementing tractor loan schemes could create job opportunities for unemployed youth in the agricultural sector.

The suggestions put forward during the meeting will undergo thorough review as the government seeks to balance industry needs with economic goals.
