High-Level Flood Alert Issued for River Chenab as Heavy Rainfall Continues

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a high-level flood alert for the River Chenab, projecting severe flooding risks due to ongoing heavy rainfall in the region, which is expected to persist through August 18, 2024.

According to Press Information Department, the National Emergencies Operation Center forecasts continued rain, wind, and thundershowers, particularly heavy in the catchment areas of the River Chenab, including Sialkot, Gujrat, and Gujranwala. This intense monsoon activity is likely to cause significant rises in river levels, leading to potential inundation of low-lying areas and damage to infrastructure. The areas along the river, particularly near Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad, are at heightened risk.

The NDMA warns of urban flooding in city centers and predicts high to very high flood levels in the River Chenab. Although the rainfall intensity is expected to decrease after August 18, sporadic heavy rainfall could continue affecting the region until August 25.

To assist residents in staying informed and prepared, the NDMA has launched the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application, available on both Google Play Store and iOS App Store. The application provides timely alerts, advisories, and guidelines. Local authorities are urged to remain vigilant, and the public is advised to follow all safety guidance issued by the NDMA and local officials.
