HEC Enhances Support for University Sports with New Policies

Islamabad: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has introduced significant amendments to the Constitution and Rules of the Pakistan University Sports Board (PUSB), aiming to foster the development of university sports across the nation.

According to Higher Education Commission of Pakistan announcement issued on 24 August 2024, these changes, effective from August 23, 2024, were implemented under the leadership of Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman of HEC and PUSB. The amendments include financial incentives such as increased cash prizes for students demonstrating exceptional sports skills, and the establishment of a medical commission to ensure athletes’ well-being.

Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed emphasized the strategic intention behind these updates, stating they are designed to nurture a supportive environment for sports at university levels, which will aid in the holistic development of students and enhance their competitive abilities on both national and international stages.

The PUSB, which maintains affiliations with numerous national and international sports federations, coordinates 34 annual Intervarsity Championships across various sports disciplines, benefiting both male and female athletes. Additionally, the Board supports athletes through coaching, training, and participation in global sporting events, backed by a network of subcommittees for efficient management and execution of sports-related initiatives.
