HEC Athletes Secure 233 Medals in Yearlong National and International Championships

Islamabad: University athletes represented by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) have achieved significant success, securing a total of 233 medals across various national and international championships during the 2023-24 season. This haul includes 32 gold, 56 silver, and 145 bronze medals, highlighting the prowess and commitment of these young competitors.

According to Higher Education Commission of Pakistan announcement issued on 04 September 2024, this achievement reflects the substantial support and resources HEC provides to higher education institutions. This includes offering sports infrastructure, coaching, mentoring, and financial incentives such as prize money and scholarships based on merit.

HEC’s female athletes have been particularly standout, claiming 17 gold, 25 silver, and 21 bronze medals at national levels, alongside notable performances internationally with two silver and three bronze medals. Furthermore, at the 34th National Games, HEC athletes not only competed against seasoned professionals but also won eight gold, 17 silver, and 93 bronze medals, earning the Best Turn Out Trophy for their impressive participation.

The commission supports these athletes through the Pakistan University Sports Board (PUSB) and collaborates closely with the academic community and sports stakeholders to organize Intervarsity Championships. These events are designed to integrate physical activities with academic schedules, promoting a balanced development for students.

Recent revisions to the PUSB Constitution and Rules aim to enhance financial rewards for players, fostering a more encouraging environment for aspiring athletes. Additionally, under the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, HEC is establishing 12 sports academies in public sector universities to further develop sports infrastructure and professional training facilities. A nationwide Talent Hunt initiative has also been launched, targeting youth aged 15-25 to cultivate sportsmanship, harmony, and teamwork.
