Islamabad: Heavy monsoon rains that have affected Pakistan since the beginning of the season have led to a significant increase in casualties and damage across the country. Over the past 24 hours, at least twelve people were killed, and 21 others were injured in several rain-related incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that 108 people have died, 216 have been injured, and 490 houses have been partially or fully damaged in rain-related incidents nationwide, with the majority of casualties occurring in KP province.
On August 1 and 3, two glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) occurred in the upper and lower Chitral districts, affecting more than 15 villages, damaging 145 houses, and displacing over 500 individuals. Humanitarian needs are expected to increase as updates from remote areas, which are currently facing connectivity issues, are yet to be included.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more rainfall across the country on August 5-6, with localized thunderstorms expected in the southern and eastern parts of Pakistan.
