Heavy Rainfall Expected to Trigger Landslides and Flooding in Northern Pakistan

Islamabad: The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecasted significant rainfall in northern regions of Pakistan, including Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, from August 19 to 24, 2024, heightening the risk of landslides and flash flooding.

According to Press Information Department, NEOC anticipates increased river discharge due to rising temperatures, accelerated snowmelt, and heavy rains affecting areas like Chitral, Dir, Charbagh, Malakand, Hazara, Mirpur, Mansehra, and Abbottabad in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as Gilgit, Diamir, Nagar, and Hunza in Gilgit Baltistan. The expected heavy rainfall may cause localized landslides, particularly along the Karakoram Highway in Hunza, and in the risk-prone areas of Nagar, Gilgit, and Diamir.

NDMA has urged all relevant authorities and the public to take necessary precautions to mitigate the potential impacts of these severe weather events. The agency has issued instructions to all relevant departments to mobilize resources and ensure a swift response to any emergencies that may arise. Tourists are advised to avoid traveling to these areas during the forecast period, and residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and follow updates from local authorities. NDMA also recommends that the public download the ‘Pak NDMA Disaster Alert’ mobile app for timely alerts and closely monitor weather reports.
