Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms Expected Across Pakistan: Potential for Urban Flooding and Landslides

Islamabad: A significant weather update from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Islamabad indicates a forecast of widespread rain-wind/thundershowers across various regions of Pakistan on the 2nd and 3rd of September. The meteorological activity is attributed to a moist current from the Bay of Bengal and a westerly wave affecting the western parts of the country.

According to National Weather Forecasting Centre – Islamabad, the incoming weather system is likely to impact several areas with varying intensities of precipitation. In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, regions such as Chitral, Peshawar, and Swat among others are expected to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Punjab, including Islamabad, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, will also face similar conditions with potential isolated heavy falls.

Further details reveal that Kashmir will undergo significant rainfall from the night of the 2nd to the 3rd of September, particularly affecting the Neelum Valley and Muzaffarabad. In Gilgit-Baltistan, districts like Skardu and Gilgit are also forecasted to receive heavy rain and thunderstorms within the same period.

Balochistan and Sindh are not spared, with cities like Quetta and Karachi expecting rain-wind/thundershowers from the 2nd to the 4th of September, with occasional gaps. The weather conditions might lead to increased flow in local streams and nullahs, particularly in areas like Murree, Galliyat, and Mansehra.

The National Weather Forecasting Centre has warned of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas of major cities including Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar, due to the heavy downpour expected on the night of the 2nd and throughout the 3rd. Landslides are also a significant concern in vulnerable points across upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, and Gilgit-Baltistan during this wet spell.

In light of the forecast, authorities have been advised to stay alert and take necessary measures to mitigate any adverse effects. The Centre also advises farmers to manage their activities accordingly and urges travelers and tourists to exercise caution, particularly when planning travel and outdoor activities during this period.

The National Weather Forecasting Centre has promised updates if there are any significant changes in the weather situation.
