Lahore: In a meeting at the Central Police Office, Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, praised Head Constable Shahid Saleemi for his unique contributions during the Baisakhi Mela. Saleemi, who is celebrated for his recitations of Sufi poetry, has played a role in enhancing Pakistan’s image among visiting Sikh pilgrims.
Dr. Anwar highlighted the importance of officers like Saleemi, who not only serve in law enforcement but also possess exceptional talents. Saleemi’s recitations have resonated with audiences both locally and internationally, particularly during significant cultural events.
A spokesperson for the Punjab Police shared that Saleemi, originally from Sheikhupura, joined the force 11 years ago. His repertoire includes works by renowned poets like Mian Muhammad Bakhsh, Khawaja Ghulam Farid, and Waris Shah. During his assignment at the Nankana Sahib check post, Sikh pilgrims specifically requested his performances.
The Baisakhi Mela, a major religious festival, annually attracts thousands of Sikh pilgrims from India to Pakistan. Saleemi’s poetic contributions have been well-received, with pilgrims expressing their appreciation for his artistic expressions and the hospitality of the Punjab Police.
On reflecting about his engagement with the pilgrims, Saleemi noted the warmth and respect extended by the visiting Sikhs, underscoring the cultural and religious bonds fostered through such interactions.
