Karachi: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over escalating tensions between Pakistan and India, urging both countries to exhibit maximum restraint and avoid further escalation.
Speaking at a press conference, Guterres described the situation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors as troubling. He underscored the urgency for both sides to refrain from confrontation, act responsibly, and prioritize diplomacy.
Guterres emphasized, “War is not a solution,” warning that military conflict would destabilize the region. He called for immediate de-escalation efforts to promote regional stability.
The Secretary-General also highlighted the United Nations’ willingness to assist in diplomatic initiatives aimed at peace building. “We are ready to support and assist any initiative that advances diplomacy and fosters peace,” he stated.
Guterres’s remarks acknowledge Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and its stance on peaceful issue resolution. Experts note that the UN’s readiness to mediate aligns with Pakistan’s position on resolving the Kashmir dispute and regional tensions through dialogue.
Observers point out that Islamabad’s diplomacy gains credibility among global institutions, while India’s reluctance to engage in talks is seen as a defensive approach by the international community.
