Gujarat AIMIM leader arrested for comment on discovery of ‘Shivling’ at Gyanvapi Masjid

Ahmedabad, May 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, Gujarat, spokesperson Danish Qureshi was arrested by the Ahmedabad cybercrime branch for his comment on the purported discovery of a Shivling at the Gyanvapi Masjid in Varanasi city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Hindutva outfit, the Vishva Hindu Parishad has lodged a complaint against Danish Qureshi alleging that he had posted objectionable content on the ‘Shivling’ on social media.

A dome-shaped structure that was discovered during a three-day survey at the Gyanvapi Masjid earlier this week is being claimed to be a Shivling by Hindus lawyers who war part of survey. However, the Muslim members of the survey team have dismissed the claim, saying that the structure is actually a fountain.

The Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Varanasi district magistrate to protect the area where the ‘Shivling’ was found.

“The action was taken after it came to the notice of the cyber team that derogatory language was used against Hindu gods and goddesses from a Twitter handle belonging to Qureshi. We carried out a technical analysis of the Twitter handle and arrested Qureshi,” Crime Branch ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police) JM Yadav was quoted as saying by the Indian media.

He said Qureshi was being interrogated in connection with his post. Qureshi was booked under section 153 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (used against a person promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and also section 67 of the Information Technology Act (transmitting obscene materials in electronic form), Yadav said.
