Karachi: Governor Sindh Kamran Khan Tesuri has sent a formal proposal to key government and regulatory figures advocating for the observance of the 11th of Rabi-ul-Awwal as a public holiday and recommending restrictions on entertainment during the holy month. The governor addressed the letter to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Chief Minister of Sindh, and the Chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).
According to Sindh Governor House, the letter emphasized the sanctity of Rabi-ul-Awwal, a month of great reverence within the Muslim community. Governor Tesuri proposed that the 11th day of this month be declared a public holiday to allow for widespread participation in Eid Milad-un-Nabi celebrations, which honor the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He expressed his desire for the day to be observed with religious fervor and appropriate solemnity.
In addition, the Governor’s communication to the Chairman of PEMRA requested stringent controls over media content throughout the holy month. He advised that entertainment such as dancing, singing, and movies be curtailed, suggesting instead that programming focus on the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Governor Tesuri highlighted the potential of such content to positively influence the youth by providing them with valuable moral and religious education.
This initiative, if accepted, could see significant changes in public holiday scheduling and media programming during one of the most important months in the Islamic calendar. It underscores the Governor’s commitment to fostering a spirit of devotion and respect during this period.
