Islamabad: The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, announced significant economic reforms and tax reductions aimed at stimulating growth and aiding the salaried class, amidst parliamentary discussions and opposition scrutiny.
Addressing the National Assembly, Tarar highlighted the government’s “revolutionary steps” to drive economic growth, emphasizing a clear reduction in taxes for salaried individuals. These measures, according to the minister, are designed to foster economic stability and improve public welfare.
In response to opposition critiques, Tarar pointed out that matters of health, education, and law enforcement fall under provincial jurisdiction. He questioned the opposition’s ability to enhance health and education facilities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where they have held power for a decade. In contrast, he noted Punjab’s achievements in literacy and state-of-the-art health and education services.
Discussing the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) reforms, Tarar explained the introduction of a faceless, automated appraisement system at Karachi port. This system aims to reduce corruption and expedite container clearance times, marking a shift towards minimal human intervention through technological advancements.
On the agricultural front, Tarar confirmed that no new federal taxes have been levied on fertilizers, urging provincial governments to contribute to agricultural development. He called for bipartisan cooperation to transition the economy from stability to growth.
Turning to international matters, Tarar commended Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace, particularly amidst Israeli-Iranian tensions. He lauded Pakistan’s advocacy for Iran at the UN Security Council and reiterated the nation’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, highlighting a unified political stance across Pakistan’s parties on the issue.
