Government Focuses on Agriculture and Urea Exports as ENGRO Seeks Support

Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain met with ENGRO CEO Ali Rathore today, where discussions centered around boosting agriculture and export opportunities. The meeting highlighted the need for government support in facilitating gas supply for ENGRO’s older plants to maintain business continuity.

Mr. Rathore pointed out that Pakistan currently holds an excess stock of urea, approximately 8 to 10 lakh tons, surpassing the national demand. He noted that this surplus presents an opportunity for export, which could enhance the nation’s foreign exchange reserves. ENGRO is seeking the ministry’s backing to enable these exports.

Minister Hussain assured ENGRO of the government’s commitment to addressing the gas supply issue and promised full cooperation in devising a practical solution. He underlined the government’s dedication to implementing sustainable strategies to aid the industrial sector.

On the matter of urea exports, Minister Hussain indicated that a comprehensive assessment of Rabi and Kharif crop requirements for the 2025-26 seasons across provinces will be conducted. The decision to allow exports will only follow once domestic needs are fully assured.

The government’s commitment to partnering with businesses to uplift the agricultural sector and promote exports was reiterated by Mr. Hussain. He acknowledged the potential positive impact on foreign exchange reserves through urea exports, but emphasized that meeting domestic requirements remains paramount.

Furthermore, the minister emphasized the government’s resolve to ensure timely fertilizer availability for farmers, as part of broader efforts to enhance agricultural productivity in Pakistan.
