Government Endorses Balanced Solarization Approach, Says Power Minister

Islamabad: The Federal Minister for Power Division, Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting solarization, emphasizing a balanced approach that does not unfairly affect non-solar consumers. He addressed misconceptions about the government’s stance, underscoring its support for solar energy while highlighting the necessity of stable power sources for grid reliability.

According to Press Information Department, Minister Leghari clarified in a statement that while solar power reduces reliance on fossil fuels, it is limited to daylight hours. He pointed out the challenges posed by high penetration of rooftop solar systems, which can affect grid stability and necessitate the use of flexible gas-based generation during evening hours. The minister also addressed the impact of recent LNG supply disruptions due to geopolitical tensions, indicating that demand management would prioritize critical sectors like fertilizer for food security while implementing temporary restrictions on other sectors based on system needs.

Minister Leghari dismissed proposals to shift entirely to coal-based generation, stressing the importance of a balanced power system where coal provides base load and gas ensures flexibility. He noted that despite higher gas prices for captive power, grid demand has increased following the introduction of a surplus power package that offers competitive electricity rates. January 2026 recorded a significant increase in electricity demand, with industrial consumers saving approximately Rs12 billion in the first two months of the year.

The minister highlighted ongoing reforms in the power sector, including privatisation efforts and a liberalised market framework, aimed at enhancing energy security and economic stability. He reiterated the encouragement for consumers to adopt clean energy solutions while maintaining a stable and secure energy system amid global uncertainties.
