New York, At a significant event hosted by Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, international speakers, including Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Munir Akram, called for decisive global measures to mitigate the hardships faced by women and girls in territories under foreign occupation. The discussions highlighted the severe effects of conflicts on female populations, particularly emphasizing the situations in Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Munir Akram drew attention to the longstanding adversities faced by women in these regions, citing historical and ongoing conflicts that have severely impacted their lives. He detailed the harsh realities for Palestinian women since the 1948 Nakba and the continuous violations against Kashmiri women post the 1989 Intifada, advocating for a robust international response to these crises.
Participants at the event urged the international community to adopt and enforce United Nations resolutions, treaties, and conventions uniformly to terminate the foreign occupations and conflicts disproportionately affecting women. A significant proposal was the establishment of a UN monitoring mechanism to document offenses against women in these areas, coupled with the creation of international judicial bodies to hold perpetrators accountable, including a proposed International Criminal Tribunal.
Furthermore, the speakers advocated for the expansion of existing international legal frameworks to offer greater protection to women in occupied territories. This could include additional protocols to the Geneva Conventions or new Security Council resolutions aimed at safeguarding women’s rights and ensuring justice for victims of sexual violence and other abuses.
These calls for action reflect a collective aspiration towards enhancing the international legal apparatus to protect vulnerable women in conflict and occupation settings, aiming for a future where their rights and dignities are fully upheld.
