Islamabad: A significant step in the global fight against illicit trade was marked with the launch of the Global Illicit Trade Index 2025 and a detailed analysis report on combating illicit trade in Pakistan. This launch, held at the Marriott Hotel’s Ambassador Hall, was a joint effort by the PRIME Institute and the Transnational Alliance to Combat Illicit Trade (TRACIT).
The event drew participation from key figures across government sectors, business, and civil society, all converging to address the challenges posed by illicit trade and to support policy reforms in Pakistan.
Rana Ihsaan Afzal Khan, the Chief Guest and Coordinator to the Prime Minister at the Ministry of Commerce, delivered the closing remarks. He outlined several initiatives by the Federal Board of Revenue aimed at curbing smuggling and improving transparency. Key measures include the implementation of a Faceless Customs Assessment System, the expansion of the Track and Trace system to cover pharmaceuticals and petroleum, advancements in border customs, and reforms in Afghan Transit Trade procedures.
Jeffrey P. Hardy, the Director General of TRACIT, provided a keynote address that highlighted global strategies to combat illicit trade. He also acknowledged the proactive steps being taken by Pakistan in this arena.
The reports released offer strategic recommendations for policy action, advocating for a comprehensive approach involving all segments of society. The discussions at the event reinforced Pakistan’s dedication to ensuring trade integrity and combating illicit trade practices.
