Gillani Calls for Strengthening Parliamentary Capacities

Islamabad: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani on Wednesday inaugurated a workshop for the Council of Chairpersons of the Punjab Provincial Assembly. The event, held in Islamabad, was organized by the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services in collaboration with the European Union.

Addressing the gathering, Gillani highlighted the critical role of parliamentary committees in legislation, budget scrutiny, and incorporating public aspirations into policymaking. He stressed the need to enhance the capacities of parliamentarians and staff to improve parliamentary performance and meet international standards.

Gillani noted that the committees of the Upper House have consistently provided an effective platform for consensus-building and addressing complex national issues. He emphasized the importance of these committees in highlighting the voices of marginalized segments of society.

The Chairman Senate also remarked on the equal representation of all provinces in the Senate, ensuring comprehensive discussion of issues from across the country.

Speaker Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmed Khan, speaking at the event, described parliament as the foundational institution from which all state organs originate. He emphasized that parliament, with its houses and provincial assemblies, truly reflects democracy through elected representatives.
