Islamabad: In a pivotal move to enhance transportation links with China and Central Asia, Federal Minister for Communications, Privatization, and Board of Investment Abdul Aleem Khan highlighted the strategic importance of the Gilgit-Khunjrab Motorway during a high-level National Highway Authority (NHA) meeting. The Minister emphasized the project’s potential to revolutionize regional connectivity and boost economic growth.
According to Press Information Department, Minister Khan underscored the necessity for the NHA to focus on generating higher revenues through new initiatives, including the construction of new toll plazas. He stressed the importance of maintaining high standards in highway construction and called for the appointment of competent officers to oversee these critical projects. The meeting also addressed the broader challenges of funding and efficient project management to ensure that the NHA could expand its operations internationally.
In discussions about the northern region, the construction of the Gilgit-Khunjrab Motorway was identified as a game-changer. This motorway is expected to significantly improve land connectivity, not only to China but also to Central Asian states, enhancing trade routes and facilitating economic exchanges. Additionally, the Federal Minister discussed enhancing security and facilities on highways to attract more tourists and improve the travel experience for citizens.
The meeting also covered the potential privatization of several state-owned enterprises as a strategy to alleviate the economic burden on the government. In a separate engagement, Australian High Commissioner H.E. Neil Hawkins met with Minister Khan to discuss bilateral investment and privatization efforts. The discussions highlighted the opportunities for foreign investment in Pakistan, with specific mention of sectors like aviation and banking where privatization could lead to profitability and efficiency.
