ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani hosted a luncheon for members of the Parliamentary Reporters Association (PRA) at the Parliament House, emphasizing the vital relationship between Parliament and the media in promoting democracy. In his address, Gilani highlighted the media’s role in ensuring transparency and public accountability, while acknowledging the challenges posed by misinformation in the digital age.
Gilani underscored the importance of fact-based journalism as a bridge between citizens and their government. He praised journalists for their commitment to truth, which he described as essential for maintaining public trust and strengthening national cohesion. “The media’s responsibility in promoting national cohesion and strengthening institutions by highlighting truth is more significant than ever,” he stated.
Reflecting on his political career, Gilani shared his longstanding commitment to supporting journalism, citing his background in the field and acknowledging the contributions of his political mentors. He also recalled significant milestones, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference, which he initiated.
The event also featured remarks from Gilani’s Media Advisor Mian Khurram Rasool, who thanked the Chairman for his efforts in promoting democracy and press freedom. Senior journalist Hafiz Tahir Khalil and PRA President Usman Khan both expressed the need for continued collaboration between the media and Parliament, emphasizing the shared responsibility to counter misinformation.
PRA leadership raised concerns about financial challenges faced by journalists, proposing the establishment of an endowment fund and suggesting enhanced cooperation between PRA and the Senate through initiatives like capacity-building training.
Gilani assured attendees that their concerns would be addressed, calling for a focus on truth and professionalism in journalism. He reaffirmed the media’s indispensable role in national progress and concluded with a tribute to journalists’ contributions to democracy.
