Gilani Calls for Strengthened Parliament-Media Cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the Senate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, has underscored the necessity for a robust collaborative relationship between Parliament and the media to further parliamentary democracy.

Speaking at a luncheon honoring members of the Parliamentary Reporters Association at the Parliament House on Wednesday, Gilani highlighted the crucial role the media plays in upholding public access to information. He commended journalists for their commitment to integrity and fact-based reporting, which, he said, keeps the public informed and holds the governing system accountable.

Gilani emphasized that a transparent Parliament, coupled with a free press, embodies the core of democratic values. He also noted the Senate’s contributions to legislating for the protection of journalists’ rights and expressed optimism that parliamentary reporters would continue to deliver accurate information to the public. He pledged full support in addressing the challenges faced by parliamentary journalists.

During the event, PRA President Usman Khan suggested creating an endowment fund to aid journalists and proposed integrating PRA’s website with the Senate’s online platform. He also recommended capacity-building training for PRA members through the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services.

PRA Secretary Naveed Akbar remarked on the interconnection between journalism and democracy, expressing hope that the issues raised would be promptly addressed. He extended gratitude to the Chairman Senate and the Senate Media Directorate for their ongoing support.

The luncheon event was attended by Deputy Chairman Senate Syedal Khan, Senate Secretary Syed Hasnain Haider, and numerous PRA members.
