Germany and UNDP Collaborate on Pakistan Flood Recovery Program

Islamabad, The German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), through KfW Development Bank, has committed EUR 12 million to aid flood recovery and reconstruction in Pakistan. This initiative is a significant step towards supporting the country’s efforts to recover from the devastating 2022 floods.

According to United Nations Development Programme , the funding will be used to support the implementation of Pakistan’s Resilient Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Framework (4RF) over three years. This collaboration, which includes the World Bank, aims to expedite and integrate the reconstruction process, particularly in rebuilding houses in Balochistan.

KfW Country Director Mr. Sebastian Jacobi highlighted the critical nature of this program in supporting Pakistan’s post-flood development framework. He noted KfW’s pride in contributing to infrastructure development and climate change adaptation in Pakistan, with a total investment of EUR 50 million in flood recovery, reconstruction, and social protection following the 2022 floods.

Dr. Samuel Rizk, UNDP Pakistan Resident Representative, emphasized the importance of the partnership with the German Government. He pointed out the combination of international expertise and local knowledge in addressing the challenges posed by the 2022 floods and praised the renewed partnership with the World Bank, ensuring transparency and efficiency in the use of funds pledged at the International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan in Geneva for Climate Resilience.

World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, Dr. Najy Benhassine, reaffirmed the commitment to supporting flood-affected people. He stressed the importance of directing funds to communities and households most in need and ensuring transparency during the reconstruction process.

The 2022 floods in Pakistan had a catastrophic impact, affecting the lives and livelihoods of 33 million people, causing 1,700 deaths, displacing 8 million people, and pushing 9 million of the most vulnerable populations into extreme poverty. The partnership between the Government of Germany through KfW, UNDP, and the World Bank is a testament to the ongoing efforts to address Pakistan’s post-flood challenges and aid in the country’s recovery and rebuilding efforts.
