New Delhi, October 13, 2022 (PPI-OT):The funeral prayers in absentia for the martyred All Parties Hurriyat Conference senior leader Altaf Ahmed Shah was offered in New Delhi’s Tihar jail. The funeral prayers in absentia were offered by a large number of prisoners, including APHC Chairman Masarat Aalam Butt, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Muhammad Aiyaz Akbar, Raja Merajuddin Kalwal, Peer Saifullah, Farooq Ahmed Dar and Shahid-ul-Islam, languishing in the jail.
They paid rich tributes to the martyred leader for his contribution and sacrifices in the ongoing right to self-determination movement. Altaf Shah died in Indian captivity at New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences where he was shifted from Tihar jail after being diagnosed with late stage renal cancer. He had been languishing in Tihar jail after his arrest in July 2017 for raising voice for the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. The Kashmiri political prisoners, including top leadership in Tihar jail, are facing the worst kind of inhuman attitude and political injustice in the jail. The Altaf Ahmed Shah’s tragic death in custody speaks volumes about the dangerous tactics the Indian communal Hindutva government of Modi has been using to eliminate legitimate political voices of Kashmir that have refused to toe its diktats.
The Indian jail authorities are blatantly refusing to provide medical care to the jailed Kashmiri political leaders and ignoring their deteriorating health conditions. The Kashmiri leaders and political activists are under bogus cases and leaving them to rot in jails far away from their homes is part of the Modi government’s policy intended to render the ongoing freedom struggle a leaderless movement. The analysts in Srinagar said that denying medical facilities and other basic amenities to Kashmiri prisoners in jails is a dangerous killing tactic Indian authorities have been using to punish and persecute Kashmiris.
