Srinagar, Indian security forces have initiated a new wave of operations targeting Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) members in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), resulting in widespread concern and condemnation. These actions include raids, arrests, and the seizure of documents related to JI’s social and welfare programs, intensifying the crackdown on political and social activism within the region.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the operations are being led by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) along with paramilitary forces, focusing on JI activists involved in educational, healthcare, and welfare services for disadvantaged communities. The recent surge in house raids and searches has led to the confiscation of documents belonging to JI trusts and their members, who are noted for their contributions to societal welfare, including support in education, healthcare, and marriage arrangements for the poor.
The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has voiced its serious concerns over these developments, criticizing the victimization of civilians by Indian forces and investigative agencies. The crackdown, conducted across various districts including Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, Kulgam, Islamabad, Kishtwar, and Jammu, has been described by the APHC as a campaign of political vengeance against Kashmiris for their commitment to social, religious, and political service.
The APHC’s statement also calls for the immediate release of all Kashmiri political prisoners detained in jails across India and IIOJK. Furthermore, the organization has appealed to international bodies such as the UN Human Rights Council, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and others, urging them to assess the dire human rights situation in the occupied territory firsthand.
This escalation in operations against Jamaat-e-Islami members and the broader clampdown on civil liberties in Kashmir have raised alarms about the deteriorating human rights landscape in the region, prompting calls for international intervention and oversight.
