Former Legislator and BJP Leader Yumsem Matey Abducted and Killed in Arunachal Pradesh

Karachi, In a shocking development in Arunachal Pradesh, India, Yumsem Matey, a former legislator and leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was abducted and subsequently killed. Matey, who had recently announced his candidacy for the upcoming assembly elections, was taken from a social event in the Tirap district and later found deceased near the international border.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the 54-year-old BJP leader was abducted by armed men from a social function in Raho village of Lazu circle, Tirap district. The police have reported that after the abduction, Matey was taken to the international border, where he was killed at close range. The precise circumstances and motive behind the abduction and killing are still under investigation.

Matey, a former Congress MLA for Khonsa West from 2009 to 2014, switched allegiance to the BJP in 2015. Although unsuccessful in the 2019 elections, he was planning to contest again from the Khonsa West constituency in the next year’s polls. His sudden and tragic death has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of the region.

The incident occurred in a region known for its sensitive geopolitical situation. Arunachal Pradesh’s southern districts, including Tirap, Changlang, and Longding, which border Myanmar, are under the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). This law has been a subject of considerable debate due to its implications for security and human rights in the region.

The police have claimed that rebels from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) are responsible for the killing of the former MLA and BJP candidate. This assertion, if confirmed, would add a complex dimension to the ongoing security and political challenges in the region.

The killing of Yumsem Matey raises serious concerns about the safety and security of political leaders in volatile areas and the implications for the democratic process in such regions.
