Karachi: A significant disruption in electricity supply to Karachi occurred when a 132kV tower of the Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company (STDC) collapsed due to flooding at Thaddo Dam, according to Sindh Minister for Energy, Development, and Planning, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah. The collapse resulted in an interruption of 100 MW of electricity to the city.
In response, Minister Shah swiftly directed the CEO of STDC, Saleem Ahmed Sheikh, to restore the damaged tower and resume electricity transmission. The CEO, along with his team, including Senior GM Tariq Saeed, Technical Manager Saad Zuberi, and Assistant Technical Manager Muhammad Bilal, managed to temporarily re-erect the collapsed tower, successfully resuming the electricity supply.
The incident was reported to have occurred on the night of September 9, 2025, when Tower No. 349 of the 132kV double-circuit transmission line, running from the Sindh Noriabad Power Company to K-Electric’s DA 33 Grid Station in Karachi, collapsed due to the flooding.
Minister Shah was promptly informed by the STDC team, who were instructed to take emergency measures. Saleem Sheikh noted that, under typical conditions, the installation of a new tower could take about a month. However, the team managed to temporarily restore the tower in record time using long boom cranes and expert transmission line teams.
Efforts for constructing a new permanent tower have already begun. Minister Shah expressed his appreciation for the dedication and efficiency demonstrated by CEO Saleem Sheikh and his team, emphasizing the value of committed officers to the organization and the province.
