First RoRo Vessel Carrying Over 2,000 EVs Berths at Karachi Port

Karachi: Pakistan marked a milestone in its maritime and logistics sectors with the arrival of M.V. Grande Shanghai, a Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessel carrying over 2,000 electric vehicles (EVs). This event signifies the country’s first-ever RoRo shipment of EVs.

According to Press Information Department, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the successful berthing of the 220-meter vessel at Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML) terminal of Karachi Port Trust (KPT). The vessel’s arrival follows the minister’s approval of RoRo shipments of electric vehicles during a recent committee meeting on maritime issues.

The minister highlighted that the handling of the vessel reflects the advancement of port infrastructure in accommodating specialized cargo operations in line with international standards. He emphasized that this achievement illustrates Pakistan’s integration into the global clean mobility and sustainable transport supply chain.

Junaid Chaudhry explained that RoRo operations differ from conventional cargo methods, as these vessels are designed to transport wheeled cargo, allowing vehicles to be driven directly on and off the ship. This system reduces cargo handling time, enhances safety, and improves port efficiency.

The successful berthing of M.V. Grande Shanghai underscores the Karachi Port Trust’s commitment to modernizing port operations and facilitating trade through technology-driven logistics. The minister reiterated the government’s dedication to initiatives that strengthen the maritime sector and enhance Pakistan’s connectivity with global shipping networks.
