Meerut, In a controversial move, an FIR has been registered against approximately 100-200 Muslim worshipers for offering Eid prayers at the Shahi Eidgah in Meerut, a city in the BJP-governed state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The legal action has sparked concerns about religious freedoms and the targeting of minority groups in the region.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the FIR was filed by Sub-Inspector Yogesh Kumar, who cited violations related to unlawful assembly and obstruction during the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. Kumar reported that he was on duty at the site to ensure the festival’s safe completion. Despite initial peaceful interventions to clear individuals praying on the roadside due to overcrowding at the Eidgah, the situation escalated when additional worshipers gathered outside the designated prayer area.
The incident at Shahi Eidgah highlights ongoing tensions in Meerut, where religious practices of minority communities are increasingly scrutinized under local law enforcement policies. The case raises significant questions about the balance between public order and religious expression in Uttar Pradesh.
