Islamabad: In a significant development, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, engaged in discussions with Ms. Pernille Ironside, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan, focusing on the pressing issues of child welfare, education, and the dual threats of climate change and population growth.
The Finance Minister commended UNICEF’s invaluable technical support and knowledge-sharing efforts in the region. He pointed out the urgent challenges posed by climate change and rapid population growth, which are critical factors contributing to child stunting and learning poverty in the nation. The Minister elaborated on the Country Partnership Framework with the World Bank, revealing that a substantial portion of the anticipated USD 2 billion annual funding over the next decade will be channeled towards addressing these population-related issues. He stressed the necessity of optimizing resource use to tackle these daunting challenges effectively.
Senator Aurangzeb further acknowledged the pivotal role played by UNICEF and other developmental allies in aiding Pakistan’s initiatives. He emphasized the need for robust collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change, Ministry of Population Welfare, and Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination. He advocated for enhanced coordination in pinpointing priority areas and projects that demand interventions, along with providing technical support and capacity building for relevant ministries. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of seamless cooperation between federal and provincial governments for the successful implementation of these projects.
Ms. Ironside reiterated UNICEF’s dedication to Pakistan, underscoring its active collaboration with pertinent ministries and stakeholders across various sectors, with a particular emphasis on child care and the education of girls. She highlighted UNICEF’s strategic partnerships and leadership in executing initiatives aligned with national priorities, employing a multi-sectoral approach to community welfare. She also discussed opportunities for strengthening UNICEF’s contribution to Pakistan’s development.
Both parties affirmed their commitment to continue their collaborative efforts to address the challenges confronting children and communities in Pakistan, aiming to enhance cooperation for sustainable development.
