Finance Minister Reviews Retailers’ Tax Scheme Progress, Aims to Broaden Tax Base

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, led a meeting at the Finance Division to evaluate the progress of the retailers’ tax scheme, emphasizing the facilitation of registration processes and the broadening of the tax base. Present at the meeting were the Minister of State for Finance, the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and senior officials from the FBR.

According to Press Information Department, the Finance Minister highlighted the government’s efforts to simplify tax procedures and assist retailers in meeting their tax obligations. The scheme is designed to provide a straightforward path for retailers to integrate into the formal tax system, contributing to the country’s economic growth.

The meeting assessed the progress of registrations and tax returns under the scheme, considering the involvement of existing taxpayers and the requirements for tax payments. The Finance Minister stressed the importance of evaluating implementation experiences and resolving operational issues to ensure the scheme’s success.

Efforts to identify and map unregistered retailers using available data and identification records were also discussed. The FBR provided insights into data validation and the necessity of accurate registration records reflecting the concerned businesses.

Senator Aurangzeb advocated for a balanced approach that combines taxpayer facilitation in a targeted and documented manner. He further clarified that the Retailers’ Tax Scheme should be seen as an ongoing initiative rather than a one-year arrangement restricted to 2026, aiming to offer a simplified entry for small retailers into the formal tax system.

The meeting further examined filing procedures, deadlines, and related operational aspects, reaffirming the importance of making tax compliance simpler and more accessible for small retailers. The Finance Minister stressed that sustained progress would require effective facilitation and a consistent approach.
