Finance Minister of Pakistan Leads Borrowers’ Platform at World Bank-IMF Meetings

Bangkok: Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, has assumed the chairmanship of the Governing Council of the Borrowers’ Platform during the World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand. He took over the position on behalf of Pakistan, acknowledging the leadership of Egypt and contributions from member countries and the Secretariat.

According to Press Information Department, the Finance Minister emphasized that the Platform is intended to facilitate mutual learning and technical cooperation, rather than function as a collective bargaining or crisis-management tool. He also set forth Pakistan’s priorities for the 2026-27 work plan, which include strengthening debt-management practices, sharing reform experiences, and exploring new development-financing instruments.

Senator Aurangzeb reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to achieving practical implementation and measurable outcomes, underscoring that debt should be utilized as a tool for development, not as a hindrance. In his concluding remarks, he lauded the swift progress in establishing the Platform’s institutional foundations, governance structures, and shared work programme, while also noting the growing interest from potential member countries. Following the session, he addressed a press conference to further discuss these developments.
