Islamabad: In a concerted effort to stabilize Pakistan’s economy through increased exports, Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, underscored the need for enhancing the viability of the Department of Plant Protection. This initiative aims to improve agricultural practices and expand Pakistan’s export capabilities.
According to Ministry of Industries and Production announcement issued on 31 July 2024, during his Wednesday visit to the Department of Plant Protection, Minister Hussain engaged with senior department officials and stakeholders to discuss strategies for improving export performance. The meeting focused on addressing the operational challenges of the department and the grievances of stakeholders, emphasizing the need for quality production and efficient agricultural management.
Minister Hussain highlighted the economic damage caused by outdated agricultural methods and stressed the importance of adopting modern techniques to meet export targets and reduce the trade deficit. He also pointed out the global demand for ‘Halal’ meat as an opportunity to expand market reach, even in non-Muslim countries, suggesting that strategic market analysis and structural strategies could open new avenues for exports.
The Director General of the Department of Plant Protection, Tariq Khan, emphasized the need to lift the European ban on certain Pakistani export products, which has significantly impacted the industry. He advocated for the digitization of the department and improved inter-agency coordination to enhance transparency and efficiency.
The stakeholders present, including representatives from Crop Life Pakistan Association, the Rice Export Association of Pakistan, and others, called for policies that facilitate ease of doing business to maximize their operational capacity. They were also tasked with maximizing the registration of Methyl Bromide a crucial step for ensuring high-quality fumigation and plant yield essential for export quality products.
The session concluded with Minister Hussain urging all parties to maintain transparency and dedication towards achieving Pakistan’s export and economic goals.
