Islamabad: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has mandated the priority conversion of major highways to the “Intelligent Transportation System” (ITS) to enhance technological integration and improve travel efficiency. The minister specifically highlighted the M2 Motorway for immediate inclusion in the ITS Program, urging the unification of cameras, security infrastructure, and communication networks. Additionally, a directive was issued to introduce a cashless and free-flow electronic toll collection system on all major routes to modernize infrastructure and ensure smooth travel for passengers.
According to Press Information Department, the new electronic tolling network will be integrated with the Safe City security framework to assist in traffic management and crime prevention. The Federal Minister emphasized uniform Motorway Police presence across all service areas and mandated that Rescue 1122 personnel, fire brigades, and ambulances be equipped and stationed at each service area on motorways and national highways. Furthermore, he instructed the Motorway Police to enhance emergency response protocols and expedite the provision of air ambulance services.
