Islamabad: The Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, met with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative to Pakistan, Florence Rolle, to discuss strategies for enhancing climate resilience in Pakistan’s agriculture sector. The meeting aimed at addressing national food security challenges and improving the sector’s sustainability.
In the meeting, concerns were raised about the effects of climate change on Pakistan’s agriculture, including unpredictable weather, droughts, and pest outbreaks. These issues have been particularly challenging for smallholder farmers. Minister Hussain acknowledged the country’s vulnerability to climate-induced stresses and stressed the need for innovative and sustainable agricultural practices.
Minister Hussain outlined government initiatives to boost agricultural productivity. These include the provision of certified seeds and fertilizers, mechanized farming, and modern irrigation techniques.
FAO’s Florence Rolle commended Pakistan’s modernization efforts and pledged continued FAO support. She highlighted the significance of improving food value chains, reducing post-harvest losses, and utilizing digital technologies. Rolle also emphasized the importance of training programs, particularly for women and youth.
Both parties agreed on the importance of collaboration to secure Pakistan’s food systems and support agricultural growth. The meeting ended with a commitment to strengthen cooperation for a sustainable agriculture sector that can face future challenges and contribute to national prosperity.
