Islamabad: In a strategic move to boost the operational capacity of Gwadar Port, the federal government has resolved to redirect half of the public sector’s imports to this facility, a decision influenced by recent diplomatic engagements with China.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, this shift follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to China, after which the Ministry of Maritime Affairs was tasked to prepare a summary for the cabinet to facilitate imports through Gwadar. This port, integral to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is envisioned as a vital trade conduit between China, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.
Currently, Gwadar Port can host two large ships, but plans are underway to expand this capacity to 150 ships by 2045. The development is expected not only to create substantial employment opportunities but also to enhance regional connectivity and attract more foreign investment into the country.
