Federal Committee Formed to Transition Three Power Plants to Thar Coal

Islamabad: In a significant move aimed at enhancing energy security and reducing reliance on imported fuels, the Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Leghari has announced the formation of a committee tasked with transitioning three Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to Thar coal. The initiative is expected to leverage domestic coal resources, potentially stabilizing the country’s energy supply and reducing the cost of electricity.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the newly established committee will be chaired by the Additional Secretary Power Division. The main objective of this committee is to conduct a comprehensive technical and fiscal analysis to assess the feasibility of converting the three IPPs from using imported coal to Thar coal. This analysis will be completed after thorough consultation with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that all aspects of the transition are considered.

The committee’s responsibilities will also include examining the logistics required for transporting coal from Thar mines to the project sites. Upon completion of these studies, the committee is expected to provide recommendations and a detailed implementation plan to the government.

This strategic shift not only aims to capitalize on a domestic resource but also aligns with broader environmental objectives by potentially reducing the carbon footprint associated with energy production in the country.
