Federal and Punjab Governments Forge Joint Strategy to Enhance Livestock Sector

Islamabad: In an effort to tap into the vast potential of Pakistan’s livestock and dairy sector, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, and Punjab Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Syed Muhammad Ashiq Hussain Shah Kirmani, convened a high-level meeting to discuss a coordinated strategy for its development.

According to Press Information Department, the Federal Minister emphasized the sector’s critical role in the agricultural economy, highlighting its potential for growth, employment, and exports. He pointed out the absence of a structured framework, which hinders productivity and global competitiveness, stressing the necessity for provincial collaboration, particularly with Punjab, a major livestock producer.

The Federal Minister advocated for reforms that include the development of large-scale livestock farms, scientific breeding facilities, and export-oriented production. He noted the international demand for live animals and called for a policy framework to support sustainable exports. The Ministry will facilitate provincial coordination, policy support, and integrated efforts to modernize the sector.

The Punjab Minister outlined the provincial government’s initiatives, such as the livestock card for interest-free financial support, animal tagging, and vaccination programs. He discussed ongoing efforts to promote livestock fattening, herd transformation, and establish disease-free zones in Bahawalpur to enhance export potential and compliance with global standards.

Both ministers agreed on the necessity of aligning federal and provincial policies to create a regulated, export-driven livestock sector. They highlighted the need for modern farming practices, improved breeding systems, and better animal health infrastructure to capitalize on the sector’s potential.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to strengthen coordination and jointly pursue policies to transform Pakistan’s livestock sector into a robust and globally competitive industry.
