Federal and Punjab Governments Collaborate to Tackle Electricity Theft


Islamabad, In a significant step towards curbing electricity theft in Punjab, Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari and Punjab Chief Minister Ms. Maryam Nawaz held a meeting via zoom to formulate a joint strategy. They agreed on the formation of dedicated task forces and implementation of incentive schemes to improve energy recovery and reduce theft, marking a concerted effort to address this pervasive issue.



According to Press Information Department, the meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between federal and provincial authorities to effectively combat electricity theft. A multifaceted approach involving the establishment of district-level task forces comprising magistrates, police, intelligence officers, and legal experts was discussed. These teams are expected to execute targeted actions against electricity theft and ensure the prosecution of offenders, including delinquent officials from Distribution Companies (DISCOS).



The discussion also led to the agreement on incentives for provincial officials demonstrating significant contributions to curbing power theft and improving revenue collection from defaulters. Furthermore, both leaders concurred on the necessity of strict disciplinary measures against any DISCOS officials complicit in theft, as part of broader efforts to enhance the integrity and performance of the energy sector.



The commitment to reinforce the legal framework for prosecuting electricity theft indicates a strong political will to rectify inefficiencies and enforce accountability within the power distribution system in Punjab.
