Federal and Provincial Leaders Discuss Petroleum Pricing and Subsidy Reforms


Islamabad: A high-level meeting involving the Federal Government and provincial leaders on petroleum pricing and targeted subsidy schemes took place at the Finance Division, chaired by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb.



According to Press Information Department, the meeting was attended by prominent figures, including Chief Minister Punjab, Ms. Maryam Nawaz Sharif; Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah; Chief Minister Balochistan, Mir Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti; and Finance Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mr. Muzzammil Aslam. Senior federal ministers and officials also participated, emphasizing the commitment to a coordinated approach in addressing petroleum pricing and subsidy reforms.



The Finance Minister opened the meeting by emphasizing the need for collaborative decision-making between the Federation and provinces. The discussion focused on shifting from generalized subsidies to targeted frameworks, considering administrative capacities, data, and socioeconomic factors of each province.



Deliberations included ensuring support reaches vulnerable segments while maintaining fiscal discipline. Participants explored subsidy delivery mechanisms using existing databases, digital platforms, and cash transfer systems. Transparency, accountability, and effective governance were underscored as critical components of future subsidy arrangements.



A working framework for targeted subsidies will be developed and shared for stakeholder input. Provinces will refine their proposals to achieve a consensus-based solution. The Finance Minister acknowledged the constructive dialogue and affirmed the Government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups and ensuring economic stability.
