Kolkata: The father of a young postgraduate trainee doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has publicly criticized the West Bengal government, claiming his daughter’s body was cremated in undue haste.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the grieving father expressed deep dissatisfaction with the handling of his daughter’s case, stating, “There were three bodies at the crematorium, but our daughter’s body was cremated first.” He articulated his frustration with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s assurances of justice, emphasizing his family’s refusal to accept any form of compensation and questioning the integrity of the ongoing investigations.
The incident, which led to the death of the 31-year-old doctor found with multiple injuries on August 9, has sparked significant public outcry and protests, demanding justice and questioning the safety of medical professionals in the region. The victim’s father alleges a cover-up, claiming lack of cooperation from both the department and the college, and implicating widespread systemic involvement in the mishandling of the investigation.
In response to the growing unrest and public demand for justice, the Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the case. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is scheduled to hear the matter on August 20.
Meanwhile, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team has been actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and death. The team conducted 3D laser mapping in the Emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 18 to gather more evidence.
