Srinagar, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his recent remarks about the ‘mangalsutra,’ accusing him of targeting Muslims. Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Abdullah denounced Modi’s comments, which suggested that Muslims might snatch the mangalsutra of Hindu women.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Abdullah strongly rebuffed Modi’s implication, asserting that Islam teaches respect for all religions and does not advocate disrespect. He stated, “Our religion, Islam, teaches us to treat everyone equally. It does not advocate disrespect towards other religions.”
Abdullah’s criticism came in response to Modi’s speech at a rally in Rajasthan, where the prime minister insinuated that the Congress party planned to distribute valuables, including mangalsutras, to specific groups. Abdullah refuted these claims, emphasizing that Islam does not support any form of disrespect towards other faiths. “It is inconceivable that a Muslim would snatch the mangalsutra of a Hindu mother or sister. Anyone doing so does not comprehend Islam,” he said.
The NC leader also questioned the BJP’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ agenda, expressing doubt about its feasibility given India’s diverse states. He raised concerns about potential amendments to the Indian constitution
, questioning the BJP’s motives and the implications for India’s democracy.
In addition to condemning Modi’s remarks, Abdullah urged political allies to consider the BJP’s treatment of Muslims before supporting the party. He warned against alliances that could compromise the interests of minority communities and reiterated that Islam promotes respect and equality.
Abdullah’s strong condemnation reflects growing discontent with the BJP’s rhetoric and policies, particularly among India’s minority communities. His call for caution against supporting the BJP without fully understanding its approach underscores the broader debate over India’s political landscape and its impact on religious harmony.
