Mumbai, Maharashtra’s Marathwada region witnessed a significant increase in farmer suicides in 2023, with 1,088 cases reported across its eight districts as per recent data.
According to Kashmir Media Service, this figure represents an increase of 65 cases compared to the previous year. The report highlights a worrying trend of rising farmer suicides in the region, which has become a major concern for both local and national authorities.
The detailed breakdown of the suicides reveals that Beed district recorded the highest number of deaths with 269 cases, followed by 182 in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 175 in Nanded, 171 in Dharashiv, and 103 in Parbhani. Additionally, Jalna, Latur, and Hingoli districts reported 74, 72, and 42 cases, respectively.
In contrast, the year 2022 saw a total of 1,023 farmer suicides in the Marathwada region. This continuous rise in the number of farmer suicides is a growing concern, reflecting the distress in the agricultural sector of the region.
The Wire’s report also highlights a broader national issue, stating that since the Narendra Modi government assumed power in 2014, an average of 30 farmers have been dying by suicide every day in India. This alarming statistic underscores the urgency of addressing the challenges faced by farmers across the country.
