FAO Recognizes Pakistani Woman as One of 100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems

Islamabad: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has honored Aqsa Mirwani from Balochistan, Pakistan, as one of its 100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development. This recognition highlights the significant contributions of women to agriculture, food systems, and rural development globally, as part of FAO’s celebration of the International Year of the Woman Farmer in 2026.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Aqsa Mirwani, hailing from Awaran, Balochistan, has been acknowledged for her efforts in supporting women and girls in her community. Her initiatives focus on promoting girls’ education and addressing the social and economic challenges faced by rural women. Mirwani’s recognition underscores the contributions of women working at the grassroots level in underserved communities in Pakistan.

Through initiatives supported by FAO in Balochistan, Mirwani has been involved in agrifood enterprise development and export-readiness training. She is recognized as a registered small and medium enterprise (SME) and is part of the progressive farmers’ network. The FAO’s 100 Women Heroes initiative aims to acknowledge women who are expanding opportunities, strengthening food security, preserving knowledge, protecting natural resources, and creating opportunities for rural communities. The selection process involved 131 FAO Members who submitted 609 nominations, ensuring geographic balance and representation.

James Okoth, FAO Officer-In-Charge in Pakistan, stated that “women are at the heart of Pakistan’s agrifood systems, contributing as farmers, livestock keepers, food processors, entrepreneurs, and community leaders.” The recognition of Aqsa Mirwani serves as a reminder of the essential role of women’s leadership and contributions in building more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems. FAO continues to collaborate with the Government of Pakistan and other partners to enhance opportunities for women and promote their active participation in agrifood systems and rural development.
