Washington DC, As India prepares to celebrate its 75th Republic Day, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Chairman of the ‘World Forum for Peace Justice,’ has raised questions regarding the legality of India’s celebration in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. His challenge is based on historical United Nations Security Council resolutions.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a statement issued from Washington, Dr. Fai stressed that while India has the right to celebrate its Constitution within its legal boundaries, such celebrations in occupied Kashmir are devoid of democratic and legal legitimacy. He referred to UN resolutions from 1948, which call for a plebiscite to determine the political future of Jammu and Kashmir. Fai challenged the moral, legal, and constitutional authority of India to hold Republic Day celebrations in a region that is not recognized as an integral part of its territory.
Dr. Fai also highlighted the human rights violations in Kashmir, including over 100,000 killings, instances of torture, rape, and the use of draconian measures against dissent. He accused India of committing war crimes in the region and pointed out the lack of accountability for these actions, especially when contrasted with international responses to similar offenses in other parts of the world.
Advocating for a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, Fai emphasized the implementation of the right to self-determination, promised to the people of Jammu and Kashmir over seven decades ago. He argued that resolving the Kashmir issue could lead to reduced tensions between India and Pakistan, potentially fostering economic growth and stability in the region.
In his conclusion, Fai called for thoughtful initiatives to address long-term peace strategies and the moral imperative of the human conscience, urging the international community to consider the ongoing situation in Kashmir seriously.
