Eviction Notices Cause Distress Among Muslim Families in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: In Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, widespread alarm has taken hold among Muslim families following the issuance of eviction notices by local authorities. These notices, which demand vacating properties within three days under threat of bulldozer demolitions, have escalated fears of further conflict and displacement within the community.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the eviction orders come in the aftermath of violent clashes that occurred during the Durga Puja festival in Maharajganj, Bahraich. The situation was exacerbated by provocative music played in predominantly Muslim neighborhoods. The threat of demolition has plunged the affected families into panic, with the authorities labeling their homes as encroachments that will be forcibly removed if not vacated.

The looming threat has prompted families to hurriedly pack up their belongings, fearing for their safety. Many, especially women and children, are expressing grave concerns about the potential for renewed violence. Residents are desperate to leave, yet authorities are reportedly restricting their movements. “We just want permission to visit our relatives. We’re terrified that the violence will erupt again,” shared a local woman, echoing the sentiments of a community under siege. Another resident described the physical and emotional toll: “The door of our house was broken, and our belongings were stolen; we’re at a loss for what to do now.”

Political figures from the Samajwadi Party and Congress have voiced their opposition to the demolitions. Ameeque Jamei of the Samajwadi Party labeled the recent riots and subsequent demolition threats as discriminatory acts targeting Muslims, which stain the state’s reputation. Congress leader Manish Hindvi criticized the government’s timing and selective enforcement, highlighting the communal tension such actions foster.

The context of bulldozers as a symbol of oppression is significant in Uttar Pradesh, where demolitions are often conducted without proper legal process, disproportionately affecting Muslim residents under the guise of combating criminal activity. This method of “bulldozer justice” has become more widespread across various Indian states since Yogi Adityanath’s tenure as Chief Minister.
