Islamabad: Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, emphasized the importance of international collaboration in addressing global challenges during a meeting with a European Union Parliamentary Delegation led by Mr. ?erban Dimitrie Sturdza. The discussions highlighted terrorism, climate change, and the need for global cooperation.
Sadiq pointed to the ongoing threat of terrorism, exacerbated by the spread of weaponry and drug culture from Afghanistan. He noted that the advanced weaponry left by NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan is now used by terrorist groups against Pakistan, making Afghanistan a regional terrorism epicenter. The provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, he said, have been particularly affected.
The Speaker condemned recent attacks in Balochistan, including the incident involving the Jaffar Express, and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to combating terrorism. He praised the sacrifices of the armed forces and called for a unified global response.
Sadiq also underscored Pakistan’s commitment to democracy, highlighting the 26th Constitutional Amendment and his role in bridging political divides. He noted the issuance of production orders for arrested parliament members to ensure their participation in assembly sessions.
Touching on human rights, Sadiq mentioned the establishment of parliamentary groups and committees focused on child rights, sustainable development goals, and gender mainstreaming. He also pointed out that the issue of enforced disappearances is often exaggerated.
Climate change was another focal point, with Sadiq calling it an existential threat that requires global cooperation. Pakistan, he stated, has been severely affected by climate-related disasters, and he expressed gratitude to the EU for its support.
Sadiq reiterated Pakistan’s support for oppressed communities globally, including those in Kashmir and Palestine, and advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine conflict.
Mr. Sturdza assured the EU’s continued support for Pakistan, acknowledging its sacrifices in the war on terror and its hospitality to Afghan refugees. He emphasized the need for collective global efforts to tackle contemporary challenges.
Irish delegate Mr. Michael McNamara shared insights from Ireland’s experience with terrorism and stressed the importance of inter-parliamentary cooperation and trade agreements in strengthening bilateral relations.
The meeting also included Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, National Assembly members Ms. Munaza Hassan and Mr. Danial Chaudhry, and Dr. Riina Kionka, the EU Ambassador to Pakistan.
